Almond Cashew Butter

Now here's a beauty, you will love the nutty taste of this spread and a welcome change to peanut butter. Peanuts are highly allergenic for some folk, and peanut butter is one food that I'm not keen on kids and adults eating on a daily basis because they many quickly become allergic to it.

Almond Cashew Butter: Peanut Butter Substitute

If you’re looking for a tasty alternative to peanut butter, this almond cashew butter is perfect!

Peanuts can be highly allergenic, and I don’t recommend daily consumption of peanut butter for kids or adults, as it can lead to allergies. To check if you might be allergic, try avoiding peanuts and all peanut products for a few weeks. You might be surprised by how you feel!

Cashews also need to be consumed with caution, but almonds are generally safe unless you have a salicylate allergy—a topic I’ll dive into another time.

This recipe is simple to make, especially if you have a powerful blender like a Vita Mix. Once you start using one, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

Always Buy Fresh Nuts

It’s importantl to use fresh nuts. Take a moment to taste one before buying; you’ll quickly learn to distinguish fresh nuts from stale ones.

Even reputable health food shops sometimes sell stale nuts, so it’s worth being cautious. I recommend buying from stores with a high turnover or even supermarkets, which often sell the freshest nuts. Avoid mixed nuts, and steer clear of roasted and salted varieties—they may be old. If you prefer roasted nuts, buy fresh and roast them yourself. Store your nuts in the fridge, or better yet, in the freezer. I’ve kept walnuts fresh for up to a year this way.

Almond Cashew Butter

You can make this recipe with either roasted (try roasting in the oven at 160°C for 15 minutes) or fresh, unroasted nuts. While it’s entirely up to you, I believe unroasted and unsalted nuts are healthier than the roasted, salted kind.

Ingredients

– 1/2 cup almonds
– 1/2 cup cashews
– 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (walnut oil is a great choice for an extra kick of flavor)
– Sea salt, to taste

Method: Almond Cashew Butter

1. Blend the Nuts: Combine the almonds and cashews in your blender. Grind them into a fine paste, slowly adding the oil until you reach a smooth consistency.

2. Season: Add sea salt to taste, if desired.

3. Store: Transfer the nut butter to a clean glass jar and store it in the refrigerator.

This nut butter is an excellent substitute for this  peanut butter recipe and is sure to become a favorite in your household.
