Are Yeast Infections Contagious or Sexually Transmitted?

Yeast infections are relatively common and often misunderstood. Many people wonder whether these infections are contagious or sexually transmitted. In this article, we’ll look at the scientific evidence and explore the facts about yeast infections and their transmission.

What is a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus naturally present in the body.

As this fungus can be found naturally in the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina it is not until it grows uncontrollably that it becomes a problem.

Common Symptoms of Yeast Infections

  • – Itching and irritation
  • – Redness and swelling
  • – Thick, white discharge
  • – Pain during intercourse
  • – Burning sensation during urination

Can You Catch a Yeast Infection from Someone Else?

Understanding Contagiousness

Yeast infections are not considered contagious like the flu or a cold. They are typically caused by an imbalance in the body’s natural flora. Meaning vaginal and penile yeast infections and oral thrush are caused by an ‘overgrowth’ of the naturally occurring candida albicans already present in the body.

Sexual Relations Discouraged

Sexual relations between people with yeast infections however, is discouraged as there are still risks with yeast infections and sexual practices. But the risk isn’t linked with transmission of the fungus.

Lets explore:

Causes

Yeast Infections are opportunistic.  Meaning the yeast infection only occurs when the body’s immune system doesn’t keep control of the fungus.

Vaginal yeast infections and oral thrush are due to things like antibiotic use, pregnancy, hormonal changes, or a weakened immune system.

Preventing Yeast Infections

Oral Sex:  Any changes to the environment of the vagina can also encourage over-growth of candida albican fungus.

Thats why oral sex is discouraged.  The enzymes in saliva can neutralise the beneficial bacteria that control Candida. The vaginal flora becomes distrubed.

Good Hygiene Practices

– Wear breathable clothing: Cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing can help prevent moisture buildup, which promotes yeast growth.

– Avoid douches and scented products: These can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the body.

– Maintain a healthy diet: A diet low in sugar and refined carbs can help prevent yeast overgrowth.

-Be conscientious with washing:  A good splash of vinegar as a rinse after washing an area may provide relief from itchiness.

-Ensure you get plenty of sleep and rest: This will help your immune system.

Safe Sexual Practices

– Use protection: Using protection is always sound advice!

– Clean sex toys: Thoroughly clean sex toys before and after use to prevent the spread of yeast.

It’s important to educate yourself and your partner about these practices to maintain good health and prevent infections.

When to See a Practitioner

If you experience recurrent yeast infections, severe symptoms, or if over-the-counter treatments aren’t working, it’s wise to consult with a health-care practitioner. They can offer guidance and investigate the  underlying causes.

Yeast infections, while uncomfortable, are generally not considered contagious or sexually transmitted in the same way as other infections.

By practicing good hygiene, maintaining a healthy diet, and using protection during sexual activity, you can minimize the risk of developing a yeast infection.
