Iodine is important for the development and proper function of the thyroid gland. Iodine is absorbed in the intestinal tract and is transported through the bloodstream to the thyroid were it becomes iodized and converted into thyroxin.

Actions of Iodine Include

  • Essential for normal metabolism, mental health and speech.
  • Promotes growth and regulates the production of energy.
  • Essential for absorption of carbohydrates,.
  • Essential for the health of hair, nails, skin, teeth.
  • Proper balance of cholesterol helps to metabolize fats.
  • Conversion of carotene to vitamin A.

 Clinical Applications Of Iodine

  • Fibrocystic breast disease: when caused by iodine deficiency.
  • Immune system: iodine kills several forms of fungi and bacteria, deficiency increases the risk of several types of cancer.
  • Metabolism: intricately involved with the thyroid gland (20% of the body’s Iodine stores) Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, increases BMR, energy production/fatigue. Obesity caused by hypothyroidism.
  • Nervous system:  iodine deficiency prior to and immediately after birth has been indicated in later development of ALS, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple sclerosis.
  • Skin/Hair/Nails: improves dry hair, improves health of nails and teeth, alleviates tinea.
