Did you know that your liver serves over 500 different functions and is crucial to your overall health and well-being? You cannot survive without your liver, it is the chemical factory of your body. All of the food you eat goes through the hepatic portal vein to your liver for processing not long after it is absorbed by the small intestine.
Your liver tends to make a susbstance called bile which it then stores in your gallbladder. When you consume a fatty meal, the gallbladder secretes bile into the small intestine to help digest fats. The alkaline bile neutralises the digestive acid in addition to emulsifying fat which improves its absorption in your duodenum, the first part of your small intestine.

Research has found that the gall bladder actually has a dual purpose, as some of the tissues that make up the gall bladder can help provide your body with extra insulin, therefore removing the gallbladder reduces your body’s potential to control blood sugar more effectively. Probably the most amazing thing about your liver is that it is possibly the only organ you have which can actually regenerate after parts have been resected.

This category will look at some of the most common diseases affecting the liver and gallbladder, conditions I commonly have seen in my naturopathic clinic.
